                              Barbadian-Canadian a Recipient of 2009 Barbados Independence Honours

                              DR. JULIET MICHELLE DANIEL, GCM, received the award of GOLD CROWN OF MERIT for her highly meritorious work in the area of cancer research

                              An Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at McMaster University in Canada.  Dr. Daniel received her primary and secondary education at St. Paul's Primary School and Queen's College respectively. She then obtained a B.Sc. in Life Sciences from Queen’s University, Ontario and her Ph.D in Microbiology from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Upon completion of her PH.D., Dr. Daniel spent six years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.

                              Dr. Daniel’s work in the cancer research field is focused on understanding the fundamentals of cell proliferation and cell adhesion, and how malfunction of these processes contributes to cancer.

                              Publication Showcasing Barbadian-Canadians in the Works

                              The Office of the High Commission and the National Council of Barbadian Associations in Canada (NCBAC) are producing a publication showcasing the careers of Barbadian-Canadians who have succeeded in their respective fields of endeavour and made significant contributions to Canadian life and culture. An Editorial Committee led by Dr. Keith Sandiford, Professor Emeritus, University of Manitoba has been established; and includes His Excellency E. Evelyn Greaves, Greg Edwards, John Harewood, Marilyn Moseley, Morris Redman, Joan Rowe and Murcotte Wiltshire. It is understood that the final list will include some individuals who have died or have left Canada after making their mark in this country.
